Surgical Rooms for Large Animal Models

The Large Animal Models Laboratory includes two modern, fully equipped operating rooms
that allow for simultaneous and independent surgical procedures on large animal models.
In total, there are five independent surgical stations,
each equipped with:

● An anesthesia column with access to inhalation anesthesia gases,
A patient monitor enabling intraoperative tracking of vital signs such as
ECG, oxygen saturation, blood pressure, body temperature, and respiratory rate,
● Surgical tables adapted for use with large animals,
● An automatic data recording system for anesthetic monitoring,
● A heart-lung machine.

Anesthesia systems equipped with dual vaporizers (Isoflurane and Sevoflurane), integrated with
multi- channel vital signs monitoring, ensure full control over patient safety and
precise anesthesia delivery during every procedure.

The operating rooms are additionally outfitted with a range of high-specialization medical equipment that
enables the performance of complex surgical procedures and translational
preclinical research.

The equipment includes:

Ziehm C-arm fluoroscopy units – mobile systems for real-time intraoperative X-ray imaging,
facilitating the localization of anatomical structures, the placement of orthopedic implants, and

the control of surgical instruments
diagnostic devices without interrupting
the procedure.
Two Zeiss surgical microscopes – enabling microsurgical procedures at
high magnification and precision,
used in vascular, neurosurgical, and nerve repair procedures,
as well as for the implantation of telemetry microelectrodes.
Two heart-lung machine units – intended for procedures involving extracorporeal circulation,
essential during thoracic or major vascular surgeries
requiring temporary cardiac and
pulmonary bypass.
Two endoscopy columns – equipped with high-quality optics and lighting sources
for minimally invasive procedures such as:
○ Laparoscopy
– for diagnostic and therapeutic
abdominal access,
○ Arthroscopy,
○ Vaginoscopy and cystoscopy – for urogenital tract evaluations and interventions.
Surgical instrument sets – including basic surgical kits for
routine procedures as well as advanced
sets for microsurgery, orthopedics, neurosurgery, implantology, vascular and
laparoscopic surgeries. The range of instruments allows for flexible adaptation to research project requirements and specific
animal models.
High-temperature autoclave
ultrasonic autoclave – for effective sterilization and decontamination.
Full HD surgical camera system with transmission and recording capabilities.

The high-quality infrastructure enables a broad spectrum of experimental and translational research,
including:

Surgical preparation of animal models for translational studies, such as type 1 diabetes induction,
stroke models, spinal cord injuries, orthopedic pathologies, and
neurodegenerative conditions, in accordance with approved research protocols.
Surgical models can also be developed and customized
for specific research needs.
Testing and validation of biomedical devices and therapeutic technologies
such as vital signs monitoring systems, implants, diagnostic probes, stimulation electrodes,
and drug delivery systems under full-scale operative conditions
and within realistic physiological environments.
Telemetry systems for EMG and EEG research.
Implantation of specialized telemetry electrodes enabling long-term,
non-invasive monitoring of physiological parameters such as motor activity,
electrical activity of the intestines, bladder, uterus, or neural structures. These procedures are performed with
the highest precision, ensuring stable and reproducible results in studies
using large animal models.
Experimental studies on animal models. The rooms are equipped with Full HD surgical camera
systems with transmission and recording capabilities,
allowing for the creation of high-quality educational materials.
